Ananya Birla is a multifaceted powerhouse who has married her entrepreneurial spirit and her artistic passion—creating an identity that stands distinct from the legacy of her renowned industrialist family. Born into the illustrious Birla family, Ananya had the opportunity to follow the predetermined path of corporate leadership. However, she chose to carve her own trail, guided by her first love—music. As a successful singer-songwriter, Ananya has garnered a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim, proving that her talents extend far beyond the boardroom.
In addition to her musical career, Ananya is a trailblazing entrepreneur. She founded Svatantra Microfin, a microfinance company that empowers women in rural India by providing them with financial independence and opportunities for sustainable growth. Her vision for social change is also reflected in her establishment of Ikai Asai, a home accent company that showcases her impeccable taste in home decor and design, providing consumers with a glimpse of her aesthetic sensibilities.
Ananya’s commitment to mental health and well-being led her to establish the Ananya Birla Foundation—an organisation dedicated to ending the stigma associated with mental health issues and providing comprehensive care and support. The Foundation supports initiatives in mental health, equality, education, financial inclusion, climate change, and humanitarian relief efforts, reflecting her commitment to making a meaningful impact on society. Her entrepreneurial prowess and dedication to social causes have not gone unnoticed. She has been honoured with numerous awards, including the ET Panache Trendsetters of 2016 Award for Young Business Person and being listed as one of GQ’s Most Influential Indians of 2018.
Ananya Birla’s journey shows her intent to not walk the pre-laid path of her family’s legacy. Instead, she has carved her own unique path. Hers is a story of passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to effect positive change in the world.
Ananya’s fearless spirit and willingness to explore untrodden paths have taken her to incredible heights, both figuratively and literally. From family vacations to solo adventures, she has grown immensely. The Travel Peacock Magazine sat down with this dynamic and promising talent to discuss her journey from the boardroom to the boarding gates of the many destinations she has visited.
Read on for insights from our conversation.

Q) You were born and raised in Mumbai. What aspects of the city resonate the most with you? Tell us about some of your fond Mumbai memories.
Ananya Birla (AB): I call Mumbai, Bombay and Bombay is what I call home, mainly because my closest friends and family live here. Being born and raised in Bombay, I have a lot of memories of my school days and playing football, of the monsoons in Bombay when it rains it pours, playing football in the muck or waking up early to hear school is shut because of rains. I am a homebody and I love drinking a hot cup of chai when it’s raining. Bombay monsoon is something I have a love-love relationship with. I also love driving in Bombay which surprises people since it’s so chaotic but it’s an organised mess and I resonate with that—don’t we all carry a certain level of chaos within us? Driving on the sea link is one of my favourite things to do with really good music playing (in the background).

Q) What were some of your fondest trips from your childhood?
AB: My parents took three of us to Nice, in southern France. I remember going to Monaco and seeing the Grand Prix at that time and the cute little town, called Eze on the French Riviera. It was a beautiful trip with my entire family which is a very vivid memory of my childhood. Other than that, as a family, we would go to my home in Lonavala quite a lot. We spent many Diwalis in our farmhouse in Bangalore. It’s in Bannerghatta on the outskirts and is very serene and green. So I have some very fond memories of all of us laughing a lot and playing board games. As you can see from the pictures, London is like a second home. In London, my mother used to take me to see the change of guard at 11 every day. At that time, we were allowed to feed the pelicans at St. James Park. There was the London Trocadero then, the entertainment complex where we used to play games. Other beautiful memories include having Haagen Dazs ice cream at Leicester Square.

Q) What were some of your favourite spots in England during your graduation days?
AB: I studied Economics and Management at Oxford, so some of my favourite spots are quite close to the university. I loved spending time on Cornmarket Street, which is always bustling with activity and has a great mix of shops and cafes. Another favourite spot was the St. Catherine’s football ground, where I spent countless hours. And for a delicious meal, I often frequented a Lebanese restaurant called Al-Shami. These places hold some of my best memories from my time at Oxford.

Q) Can you share a memorable encounter with a local person or community during your travels that left a lasting impact on you?
AB: During my visit to Dimapur, Nagaland, I had the privilege of spending time at a children’s home run by the International Neighbourhood Service Society, where I connected with kids who had endured the pain of neglect and abandonment. Despite their harrowing pasts, their unwavering resilience and genuine warmth left an indelible mark on my heart, reminding me of the profound strength found in the human spirit even in the face of adversity. This rekindled a long-held dream of mine: to open a home for children without families—Neemar.

Q) Which city did you visit recently? What did you love the most about it?
AB: I just returned from London, a city that feels like a second home yet never ceases to capture my heart anew with each visit. Around this time, St James Church is even more beautiful, offering a deeper sense of solace. Hatchards bookstore, with its cosy and homely atmosphere, always wraps me in a warm embrace of nostalgia. And Shoreditch, with its vibrant energy, floods me with an adrenaline rush of inspiration for the brands I am building. At Selfridges London, I may buy nothing but I’m so inspired by the brands and the clothing. Every corner of London continues to inspire and enchant me.

Q) How does travelling, in general, inspire you?
AB: Travelling is a huge privilege. So I’m grateful that I can travel. It opens up your mind, you get insights into new cultures and new lifestyles. While travel is amazing, it can also be stressful at the same time.

Q) Your happiest and most memorable trip to date?
AB: Highlighting a single one is difficult.

Q) Do you remember your first solo trip? Any tips for solo travellers?
AB: I think it was a football trip to Sri Lanka or a chess tournament.
I’d tell other solo travellers to take the time to walk around and absorb the city on their own. Exploring on foot allows you to immerse yourself fully and to appreciate the nuances of the city. It’s a great way to experience a place at your own pace.

Q) What are your top 5 must-packs when travelling?
AB: There is one bag I carry with me wherever I go, and it holds my journal, the book I’m currently reading, my wallet, charger, and other essentials. I can’t do without it. As a chai lover, I also carry my own Indian pre-mix tea. Additionally, I bring along speakers, a trusty hot water bag, and my awesome crew.

Q) How do you stay fit during travel? Are you mindful about what you eat or do you indulge in the cuisines available?
AB: When I’m in my routine, I make it a priority to hit the gym 4-5 times a week. However, while travelling, maintaining this schedule becomes challenging. That’s when I rely on walking, which is so underrated. I aim for 10,000 steps a day. As for food, I’m not a big foodie. I have a simple palate, enjoying staples like hummus which makes it easier for me to stay mindful about eating while travelling. It’s also important to occasionally treat yourself to a good meal.

Q) What do you like to read or watch when on a long flight?
AB: Just today, I finished reading Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, a short yet profoundly impactful read. Recently, I’ve also enjoyed The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom and revisited The Alchemist. Additionally, I often download documentaries or indulge in a quintessential Bollywood film.

Q) How does the culture of the places you’ve visited influence you? What are the three things that define the essence of a city?
AB: Meeting new people and hearing their stories is always inspiring and thought-provoking. The things that define the essence of a city for me are the people, landscape, history, and weather. I especially love cold weather and the opportunity to layer up.

Q) What destinations are on your travel bucket list?
AB: Japan is on my list for many reasons—the cherry blossom, the futuristic technology as well as the indigenous wisdom and philosophies like Ikigai of the Japanese. My mother and sister went there recently. It’s a world in itself, they said. I’m also reading a book by a Japanese author Michiko Aoyama right now: What you’re looking for is in the library.

From the towering heights of the hotel, London’s iconic ever-changing skyline is a treat to the eyes!

Just steps away from Harrods, sitting between Sloane Street and Knightsbridge, Jumeirah Carlton Tower boasts a super-privileged location to explore London. The hotel’s ultimate central location is just a short walk from Hyde Park and other popular London landmarks, such as Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, and the British Museum. Set in a tower all concrete, it soars over the north end of the private Cadogan Gardens, which guests have privileged access to. The landmark establishment has been a prominent fixture in the city since its opening in 1961.

With its Art Deco architecture and impeccable service, the Jumeirah Carlton Tower has consistently attracted discerning travellers from around the world. Upon entering, the hotel guests are welcomed into the building by a striking chandelier made up of shards of crystal hanging over a woodland-style sculpture.  The lobby, with its soaring ceilings and marble floors, exudes a sense of grandeur. The hotel’s pared-back but stylish look is refreshing—and perfect when London calls you!

Lavish Living Scenes

The hotel’s guest rooms and suites offer luxurious accommodations, featuring plush furnishings and state-of-the-art amenities. Early in the morning, the balconies of the Jumeirah Carlton Tower are remarkably calm. Featuring abstract, marble-like paintings, modern tones and leather-panelled headboards with king-size beds underneath, the rooms are designed to offer a sense of tranquillity with an emphasis on light and space.

At the heart of this premium hotel lies its culinary prowess. The hotel boasts a variety of restaurants each offering a unique culinary journey. The carefully curated menu incorporates a selection of dishes inspired by the gardens and their royal connection–from a classically British coronation chicken sandwich to a delightful fruitcake inspired by his majesty’s own favourite sweet treat.

Their brand-new edition La Maison Ani is an exquisite restaurant and boulangerie that offers quintessential Parisian ambiance. Led by Evgeny Kuzin and renowned Chef Izu Ani, the charming eatery brings the best of French cuisine to the heart of Knightsbridge. Offering a menu of dishes that highlight both the rustic charm of the French countryside and the flair of Parisian bistros, the menu showcases Chef Izu’s mastery of French cuisine, with a focus on simple, fresh ingredients.

Up on the eighth and ninth floors, the former lives up to its name with phenomenal views ideal for looking out as you spin through those miles. The members’ club lounge area, with its high curved glass wall of window panelling, is one of the most refined spots to read the paper and sip an espresso high above the noise below.

From butler services for every suite to its exclusive fleet of Rolls Royce cars, the hotel maintains a dizzying standard for luxury hospitality on a global stage.

Jumeirah, a global leader in luxury hospitality, marked 25 years of Jumeirah Burj Al Arab, its iconic Dubai hotel. Since the time of its inception, Jumeirah Burj Al Arab redefined the face of Dubai tourism forever. Synonymous with the Arabian hospitality and distinctive experiences that Dubai is best known for, Burj Al Arab with its legendary sail-shaped architecture is a symbol of the city’s ambitious growth. Offering an unmatched blend of personalized luxury, extraordinary experiences, and the genuine warmth of Arabian hospitality, it attracts visitors from across the globe. As Jumeirah Burj Al Arab turns 25, here are 25 of the most iconic moments that grabbed headlines and captured the world’s attention.

Designed with intent: In October 1993, renowned architect Tom Wright conceptualised Jumeirah Burj Al Arab’s distinctive design. His initial vision was sketched in pencil on a restaurant napkin after he was inspired by the sails of a passing ship.

Reaching new heights: When construction of Jumeirah Burj Al Arab was completed in 1999, it was the tallest hotel in the world, standing at 321 metres.

Turtle power: The Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project launched in 2004 at Jumeirah Burj Al Arab and neighbouring Madinat Jumeirah, run in collaboration with Dubai’s Wildlife Protection Office and with laboratory work provided by the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory. Since then, the project has released more than 2,190 rescued and rehabilitated sea turtles safely back into the Arabian Gulf, with 88 of them monitored by satellite tracking.

Tiger tees off : In 2004, Tiger Woods hit golf balls on Jumeirah Burj Al Arab’s helipad to mark the start of the Dubai Desert Classic.

Tennis in the clouds: In 2005, tennis legends Roger Federer and Andre Agassi played their infamous tennis match on the helipad ahead of the Dubai Duty Free Championships.

Swim for a cause: The first Dubai Holding Burj Al Arab Swim event took place in 2006. The annual fun-filled community event offers a 1,600m and 800m option and raises money for the Al Jalila Foundation to support obesity research.

Crystal-clear luxury: Renowned Czech glass artisans Lasvit designed 210 crystal installations exclusively for Jumeirah Burj Al Arab in 2007. Only 210 pieces were created and no two are identical.

Drinks with a view: In 2008, Skyview Bar served up the world’s most expensive cocktail for AED27,321, featuring a 55-year-aged Macallen single-malt whisky served in an 18-carat gold souvenir tumbler.

Sky’s the limit: In 2013, His Excellency Nasser Al Neyadi of Skydive Dubai became the first skydiver to land on the helipad, capturing the experience on a GoPro camera.

Need for speed: In 2013, Formula One legend David Coulthard did “doughnuts” – or what the Infinity Red Bull Racing team referred to as “the Red Bull Seven Star Pin” – on the helipad in the Infiniti 750bhp F1 car.

Champions at play: Also in 2013, China’s world number one table tennis players, Long Ma and ShiWen Liu, played the first-ever table tennis match on the platform.

Stunt doubles: The two champions returned to the helipad with two more table tennis pros – Zhang Jike and Li Xiaoxia – for a mixed doubles helipad event in January 2014. They were part of a Chinese national team sponsored by Dubai.

Fancy fleet: To celebrate its 15th birthday, Jumeirah Burj Al Arab added four white bespoke Phantom series IIs to its iconic fleet of Rolls Royce motor cars.

Alfresco at its finest: The Terrace at Jumeirah Burj Al Arab opened in 2016, making headlines for being the first man-made luxury beach destination of its kind.

Just for kicks: Premier league legends Rio Ferdinand and Bobby Zamora played a friendly game of two touch football on the helipad in 2017.

Defying gravity: In a world first, Danish kitesurfer Nick Jacobsen broke records when he jumped off the helipad with his kiteboard, using the kite as a parachute and hang glider in 2017.

Spar in the sky: In November 2017, heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua sparred with boxing guru Seb Eubank in a makeshift boxing ring on top of the helipad.

Sky-high yoga: As part of the XYoga Festival in 2020, internationally renowned yogi Sjana Elise led a 60-minute yoga session on the helipad.

Mirror, mirror: SAL restaurant opened in 2020 and was an instant must-visit dining destination, thanks to its ‘Mirror Box’ dining room. The innovative, unique design showcases the stunning views of the Arabian Gulf, the 100-metre infinity pool, and Dubai’s skyline.

Cartier in the Clouds: The Unexpected World of Cartier high jewellery collection was unveiled on the hotel helipad at an incredible event titled Head in the Clouds in 2021.

Nothing but the beat: During lockdown, legendary DJ David Guetta streamed a live set from the helipad as part of his United at Home global tour in 2021.

Honouring heritage: To celebrate the 50th anniversary of UNESCO World Heritage in 2022, Jumeirah Burj Al Arab hosted the sky-high Art Maze, a multi-day exhibition featuring a labyrinthine gallery showcasing art, culture and technology.

Shooting for the stars: 2022 also saw fine-dining restaurant Al Muntaha, meaning ‘the ultimate’ in Arabic, awarded its first Michelin Star. Serving up the finest in French and Italian cuisine from acclaimed Chef Saverio Sbaragli, the stunning restaurant located on the 27th floor continues to retain the accolade year after year.

Bullseye landing: In a gravity-defying stunt that has never been seen before, Red Bull pilot Luke Czepiela landed a plane on the helipad in 2023.

Night of the dragon: During a spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration, Jumeirah Burj Al Arab ushered in 2024 by setting a new world record for the first 360-degree drone show around a single building. The show featured 1,500 drones that created a 300-metre-long Chinese dragon circling the iconic hotel.

Tickets at the ready, it’s time to leave the everyday grind behind and hop on an eclectic voyage with friends and family!

In this fast-paced world, traversing through the serene British countryside on a bright sunny day and embracing the art of slow travel is nothing but magical! To pay homage to this Great British tradition, the Belmond Trains have introduced their first ever luxury sleeper train in England and Wales. The Britannic Explorer promises to revolutionize the way people travel through these stunning landscapes. On board Britannic Explorer you can visit and rediscover intriguing villages, historic cities and awe-inspiring countryside, admiring the landscapes from your private suite. From the rolling hills of the Welsh valleys, to the sparkling blue waters of Cornwall, and the jagged mountains of the Lake District, celebrate all that is intriguing, quirky and quintessential about Britain.

The Britannic Explorer offers three different routes, each with its own unique charm and attractions. The Cornwall route takes passengers through the picturesque Cornish countryside, with stops at historic towns and stunning coastal villages. The Lake District route explores the rugged beauty of the Lake District National Park, with opportunities for hiking, boating, and visiting charming villages. The Wales route takes passengers through the breathtaking landscapes of Wales, with stops at castles, historic towns, and stunning natural wonders.

The train itself is a masterpiece of design and engineering, with a focus on comfort, grandeur and sustainability. It features 18 luxurious suites, each with its own private bathroom and stunning views of the countryside. Fitted with soft fabrics in dusky green, red and browns, each suite is designed to exude vintage English vibes. You can opt for a seat in your own private sleeper cabin, with a sofa by day and a double- or twin-bed configuration by night. Or opt for one of our three unique Grand Suites, each brimming with unique botanical design and boasting a double bed, wardrobe and sofa. The sleeper train also boasts a stylish bar, a fine dining restaurant, and a wellness suite where passengers can relax and rejuvenate.

The most happening highlight of boarding the Britannic Explorer is the opportunity to experience the finest British cuisine. The train’s chef creates delicious dishes using the freshest local ingredients for a menu focusing on a farm-to-fork approach. Take a seat in one of their two restaurant cars, Malva and Samphire, for a unique train dining experience. And as you spirit away to destinations anew, let off steam with a tipple or two at our Bar, located within the Observation Car. The Britannic Explorer’s Bar is a stylish hangout furnished with ochre banquettes, amber glassware and soft glowing lights. Chicly-clad mixologists will – inspired by Victorian apothecaries – take bottles of botanicals and transform them into intriguing herbal teas, bespoke cocktails and soft drinks.

The Wellness Suite aboard the Britannic Explorer offers an opportunity for restoration and rejuvenation. Aboard the Britannic Explorer, wellness is an art form that leaves you revived and ready for vivacious days and restful nights. Inspired by the golden age of the Orient Express, the OE Corinthian invites travellers to hop on a journey of a lifetime!

The Orient Express is a beacon of luxury when we talk about train travel across the globe. The iconic train with a glamorous 20th-century atmosphere is now being brought to the world of cruising to sail across the horizons. Yes, 140 years after the launch of its first luxury trains, the legendary Orient Express has now unveiled the world’s largest sailing yacht for Orient Express Sailing, the OE Corinthian. This colossal sailing yacht is a testament to the legacy of the Orient Express brand, set to redefine luxury travel on the high seas including Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Caribbean.

Scheduled to debut in June 2026, the Orient Express Corinthian is one of the two ships that Orient Express will launch initially. Designed to navigate the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Caribbean, on OE Corinthian guests will embark on serene voyages guided by the tranquil winds of nature. The new cruise ships are the result of a partnership between Accor, Chantiers de l’Atlantique and LVMH.

Designed by the renowned architect Maxime d’Angeac, the Corinthian embodies the spirit of the golden age of ocean liners. Its sleek silhouette is a sight to behold. The yacht’s interiors are a masterpiece of Art Deco charm with lavishly appointed suites, opulent lounges, and fine dining establishments. Every detail, from the handcrafted furniture to the exquisite artwork, exudes timeless opulence.

At about 721 feet long, it is the world’s largest sailing yacht, capable of sailing at speeds up to 17 knots (about 20 miles per hour) purely using the wind.  Built with an eco-conscious mindset, the OE Corinthian reduces fuel consumption and its cutting-edge emissions reduction technologies ensure this yacht minimizes its environmental footprint while protecting marine life with a specialized marine mammal detection system.

Onboard the Orient Express Corinthian, guests will find a total of 54 grand suites, each designed as premium sanctuaries keeping utmost privacy and comfort in mind. Of these, 48 suites are on mid decks while six grand suites are on the topmost deck of the ship. These suites offer breathtaking views of the ocean and are perfect to relax. Havens of peace, relaxation and contemplation, the suites offer passengers intimate surroundings in which to read, write, eat and drink, or simply chill out while admiring the view. All of the rooms are decorated with wood, leather and marble fashioned by exceptionally talented, meticulously selected craftsmen and women.

And to satisfy all tastes, the yacht boasts five elegant restaurants adorned with warm and timeless decor, each with its own strong personality. Eight bars including a 1930s-style speakeasy, a 115-seat cabaret exuding a Parisian atmosphere with art deco overtones, a recording studio, a cinema and a spa round up the range of services available to passengers. The marina at the stern of the boat offers a prestigious setting, far from the madding crowd, to enjoy dinners and sea activities right at the water’s edge.

The Corinthian’s itineraries are meticulously crafted to offer guests a unique blend of exploration and relaxation. From the sun-drenched shores of the Mediterranean to the exotic islands of the Caribbean, each voyage is filled with joy. For total relaxation, the 16.60 m long swimming pool on deck 6 provides a perfect opportunity for swimmers to keep in shape. Guests can also indulge in a variety of activities, including snorkeling, diving, and exploring historic sites.

The Orient Express Corinthian is more than just a yacht, it’s a symbol of a new era of luxury travel. By combining the grandeur of the past with the innovation of the future, the Orient Express Corinthian offers an unparalleled and unforgettable experience for discerning maritime travellers around iconic moorings and stopovers.

SPF minis

Sunscreen is one of the most essential products during your outdoor adventures. A travel-sized sunscreen is handy, which you can keep in your cabin or handbag while travelling.  If you don’t like too heavy and greasy formulas, then try a Glow Recipe Watermelon Niacinamide Sunscreen stick or a lighter fluid formula mini such as Mecca Cosmetica SPF Brightening Sun screen.

Travel-size makeup minis

Why carry your full-size make-up when you can look as precious with their minis when out and about. These small-sized makeup products not only make it handier to carry but also ideal in terms of luggage weight limitations. Pick more solid formulas such as Merit Flush Balm or Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer mini for shiny cheeks or eyes. Dolce & Gabbana Eye Dare You eyes and cheek palette will make your look even perfect.

Fragrance minis

Avoid packing your heavy glass perfume bottles, when you can pick a smaller, more handy and light version of your favourite fragrance. Opt for Marc Jacobs Daisy drops, just twist and squeeze onto your biodegradable capsule and apply. Or keep Hermes Exclusive Nomad set of 4 Garden perfumes for extra options to go with your mood.

Skin care minis set
